Christmas is a very chaotic time of year … trying to attend Christmas programs, concerts, and parties; trying to find the perfect gift; make the perfect Christmas for our family; and making sure not to forget to smile while eating your great aunt’s fruitcake. We burn the candle at both ends …  after working our shift whether 8, 10, 12, or 24 hours. We are shopping, cooking, wrapping, running, and trying to be involved in every aspect of the Christmas Season. But do we really take time to STOP and really contemplate this Christmas time. For CRNAs, December is the busiest time of the year as patients all want to proceed with their surgeries in order to beat the year end. Insurance deductibles get met, and we work long hours trying to ensure that our patients get the best care. As citizens in our communities, we attend the Christmas pageants, parades, and programs. And lastly, we give to our families as much as possible.  But once again, do we really take time to STOP, and contemplate at Christmas. While the world around you is frantically shopping, event going, and in chaos, are YOU taking a small amount of time to enjoy the little things? When you attend your children’s program, are you actually enjoying the moment? (They don’t last long!)  Are you actually looking at the lights, listening to the carolers in the mall, taking time to watch a Christmas movie with your family, and going outside to look at the stars imagining what took place over 2000 years ago. So, as I contemplate this day, I want to start by thanking each CRNA and SRNA in our great state for your dedication to providing patients excellent anesthesia care, for being leaders in your community, for ensuring that CRNAs are leaders in anesthesia. I want to thank our TANA Board of Directors, who constantly work to ensure that CRNAs and CRNA interests are protected. I also want to thank the TANA office, lobbyist, and legal counsel who work to protect our practice.  I am not only blessed with a great family, friends, and co-workers, but I have a state of great colleagues as well. STOP, this Christmas Season and enjoy the little things, thank God for family, friends, and co-workers. MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Mark J. Haffey MSN, CRNA, APN...

This includes Tacloban City, where our TASNA Representative to the TANA Board, Ian Bicol, is from. Ian will be leaving for Tacloban City to help with the relief efforts on December 13 where he will spend his J-term volunteering with the Red Cross. Please click  here to read, in Ian’s words, about the devastation to his hometown including an update on his family. Please join us for the annual TANA Day on the Hill! CRNA participation is important, and it does make a difference! So, mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 4, 2014! TANA Day on the Hill will begin at 8:00 a.m. For the past seven years, TANA has hosted a Day on the Hill event and Legislative Reception. It is a great event that allows our association to highlight the CRNA profession. It not only serves to educate legislators on issues, but also helps them to get to know their constituents. Why is this year important? TANA Day on the Hill provides an opportunity for association members to:  introduce themselves to their legislators show our strength in numbers let people know what CRNAs do, and what is important to us We had MANY legislators thank us for stopping in to see them last year in their own environment. You will be given talking points to assist in the process. We just ask that you take a day (or a few hours), come to Nashville, and come to the TANA booth to represent CRNAs from across the state. Again this year … TANA will host a reception in the evening following Day on the Hill to spend more time in a relaxed environment visiting with our elected officials. We had a great turnout last year, and even if you cannot attend during the day, we hope you can drop in for this event. And, TANA WILL PAY FOR YOUR PARKING! Here are the details: Day on the Hill Reception Puckett’s Grocery, Downtown Nashville 5:00-7:00 p.m.  If you plan to attend, RSVP to the TANA office by phone (615-329-3450) or by commenting below. Let us know who your legislators are and we will arrange appointments for you. If you are not sure who represents your district go to  http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/ and type in your zip code, or we can assist you. TANA will have giveaways, CRNA Fact Sheets, and other information for you to hand out. A more detailed schedule will follow soon. Please give us a day to help keep your practice viable. Thanks, and see you...
