Ian Bicol, our TASNA Student Representative, was recently invited to attend AANA’s inaugural Diversity and Inclusion in Nursing Education: Excellence in Healthcare Summit. Below he shares some notes about his experience, as well as some photos from the event.
The Diversity Summit was held at the Hyatt Hotel in Crystal City, Virginia. It was attended by the AANA Board of Directors, CRNAs and SRNAs from around the country. The highlight of this summit was the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program which was discussed by Dr. Wallena Gould, CRNA and Mr. John Bing, CRNA.
One of the key priority goals of AANA President Dennis Bless is to promote and advance diversity within the nurse anesthesia profession. On April 4, 2014, the AANA inaugurated the Diversity and Inclusion Summit. The live-event (by invitation only) was attended by AANA senior leadership, SRNAs, Nurse Anesthesia educators, and the Board of Directors of the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program. A simultaneous online telecast gave access to AANA members to join the event remotely. It was a great learning experience to be able to share and connect with CRNAs and fellow SRNAs and participate in developing a plan for a sustainable culture of inclusion and diversity.
